The CL Valiant was introduced in order to comply with new emissions regulations that were imposed by the Australian government in the second half of 1976. The CL would make its first appearance in showrooms around the country from November 1976.
In order to comply with government regulations regarding exhaust emissions, Chrysler introduced electronic lean burn which was believed to increase fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent with minimal loss of power.
It looked relatively similar to the previous model with minor restyling taking place on the front and back end of the car to give a smoother, more modern appearance. It utilised the quad headlight front, which gave it a much more luxurious appearance.
The engine options available were low- and high-compression versions of the 4.0 L Hemi-6, a 4.3L (265 cubic inch) Hemi 6 and the 5.2 L V8 (318 cubic inch).
Chrysler were in the process of producing an all new ‘VL’ Valiant but those plans were scrapped due to financial reasons. The 5.9L V8 was dropped from the line up. as well. This spelled real trouble for Valiant as there were now many questions surrounding its survival in Australia.
As always the Valiant was packed with a number of luxury features not offered on any other Australian car at the time. Unfortunately this was not enough to convince frugal customers who were now wanting fuel efficiency instead of size, power and comfort.
32,672 CL Valiants were produced in total including the 500 000th Valiant.
