Identifying your Hemi 6 using the engine number.
You can decode your Hemi 6 engine in order to find out how it left the factory using the engine number. The engine number can be found on the engine block next to the distributor.
Here is how you can do it:
The first digit will be the letter ‘D’ for the Valiant. ‘DF’ is the prefix given the Hemi 6 engines originally put in Centura’s
The second digit refers to the engine capacity:
1: 215 cubic inch
2: 245 cubic inch
3: 265 cubic inch
The third digit refers to the performance/ power level of your engine
1: Low compression (LC)
2: Standard performance (1BBL)
3: High Performance (2BBL)
4: Premium Performance (Pacer, R/T & 770)
5: 6 Pack (E37 & E48)
6: 6 Pack (E38 & E49)
The forth digit is the transmission
1: Automatic
2: 3 Speed Manual
3: 4 Speed Manual
The fifth digit is the year of manufacture and is notated with a letter instead of a number
A: 1970
B: 1971
C: 1972
D: 1973
E: 1974
F: 1975
G: 1976
H: 1977
I: 1978
K: 1979
L: 1980
M: 1981
The remaining numbers are a sequential build number.
