The VK Valiant was introduced to the Australian motoring public in October 1975. Visually changes were minimal when compared to the previous VJ Valiant. To date it was the least visually changed Valiant brought to market, even a number of enthusiasts struggle to tell the two apart (VJ and VK that is).
For the first time in the Valiant line up a car was introduced with fuel efficiency as a primary concern, the Fuel Pacer. The VK Valiant was dropped from production due to government regulations regarding exhaust emissions. This affected the ‘big 3’ of the family car industry as it lead to the XB Falcon being replaced by the XC Falcon and the HJ Kingswood being replaced with the HX Kingswood. The VK would be replaced by the CL Valiant at the same time.
When compared to the other family car offerings on the Australian market, the Valiant was clearly a larger car. With the fuel crisis of the late 1970’s unfolding, this was working heavily against the Valiant which had positioned itself to cater for a market of larger family cars seen in America. As they would learn, this market was small and shrinking in the second half of the seventies. Estimates have shown that at the start of the 1970’s, nearly three quarters of all new cars sold were 6 cylinder cars. By the end of the decade, just over a quarter of all new cars sold were 6 cylinder models.
The VK Valiant was brought in by Chrysler to buy itself some time while a new shape was being developed. Cost cutting was crucial at this time for the Valiant as it was continuing to lose ground to Ford, Holden and now Toyota. Despite this, the VK Valiant was a quality car with much to offer. The longer wheelbased CK Valiant was sold alongside the VK.
The VK Valiant offered 5 different engine options, 2 V8 engines and 3 Hemi 6’s
The VK Chargers were not called Chrysler Valiant Chargers, it was just simply: Chrysler Charger.
The VK Valiant was replaced by the CL Valiant in 1976 after a production run totalling 20,555.
